1 – We propose here to study movement in decorative painting with different painters like William Morris Hunt.
We went to Niagara Falls with François Rouillay and Palette Museum Team, to study movement in paintings with William Morris Hunt, observe colors and light in the picture and look at the Morris Hunt Painting, at the same place, in 1879 and in 2010.
We observed the movment of water, at the same place visited by Willaim Morris Hunt to paint in 1879.
2 – William Morris Hunt, 1824-1879.
3 – William Morris Hunt studio, in 1879.
4 – Niagara Falls by William Morris Hunt.
5 – We visited the National Gallery of Arts in Washingtown DC to admire a beautiful painting by Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) : “Wind from the sea.”
6 – “Wind from the sea” is a Tempera, hardboard, 1947. A remarkable work on movement by painting.
7 – It looks like the curtains move with the wind. What gives the feeling of energy in the scene?
8 – The presence of birds in the lace gives more fluidity to the image. Wyeth is certainly a great artist observer effects of time and movement with the painting.
If you look at the detail of the play of shadows and lights in the fibers of the curtain, do you observe?
9 – Another movement by Wyeth, the off shore. Please, clik on the picture to see full size.
10 – Another movement in painting with “The Wave” painted by Gustave Courbet (1819-1877).
11 – Detail of The Wave of Courbet. Same colors with William Morris Hunt in Niagara Falls ? Same light ?

I love the “Wind from the Sea” painting. You can almost imagine the breeze blowing in the window. I appreciate the closeups. I didn’t really take much note of the detail in the lace until I got to the close up images.
Thank you for posting these.
I love the Wind from the Sea as well. I think it is amazing how the rise and fall of the folds in the lace are achieved simply with different tones of the lines creating the lace. I would assume that the landscape was painted first with the curtain coming last. My goodness the bravery involved in placing those strokes is inspiring!

This is a beautifully haunting painting. I like how the shadows and highlights on the lace make it roll like the waves in the ocean.

Wow! When you turn on the video and look at the painting of Niagara Falls, it seems like the paint is moving on the canvas! Great study of movement. Thanks Francois.
Wind from the sea is my favourite. I love the movement in the curtaina and the close up photographs really show the detail.
A stunner!
